Gantry Crane
A gantry crane is designed to sit on top of a gantry which is a steelwork structure that will straddle a specific object to be lifted or a workshop area. The fixed steel structure normally sits by, or forms, the walls of the workshop, or is sometimes supported from the roof structure. A gantry crane is a term used for either portal cranes or goliath cranes (the latter two being where the entire structure moves, usually wheeled on rails)

Gantry Crane Types
A-Frame Gantry Cranes
With a choice of fixed or portable designs, our A-frame gantry cranes are a very popular lifting product for light and medium sized loads.
E&C Crane Engineering manufactures A-frame cranes to various sizes, heights and spans, that can lift a range of capacities.
Sometimes referred to as A-frame cranes, KDCs, or light duty gantry cranes. A frame gantry are typically used for light to medium lifting requirements, but thanks to our bespoke design capabilities, we can also offer more robust A-frame cranes for heavier applications.
What is an A-frame gantry crane?
Our A-frame cranes are a slight variation of regular gantry cranes aimed at lifting light to medium capacities. As you might have guessed, the name comes from the ‘A’ shape of the side profile.
The main beam is a horizontal member fabricated from rolled steel fitted with end plates and cheek plates suitable for connection to the rolled hollow steel leg sections.
These A-frame cranes come in two options, both of which can be adapted for indoor or outside use:
-
- Portable gantry – A-frame cranes that can be wheeled between locations as required.
- Fixed gantry – Static A-frame gantry systems, which compensate for a lack of mobility with increased strength for heavier capacities.
A-Frame crane design:
All of our A-frame cranes receive an undercoat of zinc phosphate primer and are then finished with an additional outer paint coating of your choosing.
Various options and accessories are available to you to ensure you end up with an A-frame crane suited to the task in hand:
- Manual or powered hoist travelling and hoisting motions
- Cast iron or poly tyred castors
- Castor locks
- Jacks
- Electrical isolators
- End stops
- Air feeds
- Festoons
- Galvanising (e.g. for outdoor use)
Customised A frame Gantry Cranes:
All our fixed and mobile A-frame gantry cranes are made to order, letting us fully customise the solution around your needs.
Heavy Duty Gantry Cranes
If you are looking for a solution to a challenging or high capacity lifting application, E&C Crane Engineering have the experience in designing and manufacturing heavy duty cranes to help you find the perfect system.
We have provided bespoke heavy duty gantry cranes, also known as heavy duty portal or heavy duty goliath cranes, to both trade clients and directly to end users for several decades.
Heavy duty gantry cranes
A heavy duty crane is a floor railed lifting solution with a single or multiple beams spanning between two supports. Capable of lifting extremely large safe working loads, heavy duty cranes can be manufactured for either indoor or outdoor applications.
Our team has a wealth of gantry design experience and can work with you to find a solution that meets your specific needs.
Find a heavy duty gantry crane system
Working with E&C Crane Engineering means much more than simply benefiting from the design and production expertise of a leading gantry crane UK manufacturer. To ensure all these elements run smoothly we offer project management support to integrate your new heavy duty gantry crane seamlessly with existing equipment within your workplace. As part of this we can coordinate with other suppliers and internal departments within your own organisation as required.
To ensure the maximum possible working life of your heavy duty crane, we offer follow up crane service packages such as maintenance contracts, repairs and spare parts.
Semi-Gantry Cranes
Semi-gantry cranes utilise one floor mounted rail and one raised rail to support a modified gantry lifting system.
The use of an elevated rail in semi-gantry cranes to support one end of the beam is not only often a practical option, it can be very cost-effective too.
E&C Crane Engineering are a leading UK manufacturer of semi-gantry cranes, supplying these bespoke lifting systems to trade clients and directly to end users both in the UK and across the world.
What is a semi-gantry crane?
As the name suggests, semi-gantry cranes are a variation of traditional gantry cranes.
They consist of a gantry structure made up of a horizontal beam (on which a hoist runs) connected at one end to a single upright column. The other end of the beam travels along a raised rail that is either mounted to a building wall or column/s or a dedicated freestanding gantry steel structure. The base of the upright column will typically run along the floor using tyres or a ground level rail.
You may also see semi-gantry cranes commonly referred to as semi-portal cranes or semi-Goliath cranes.
Semi-gantry cranes made in the UK
A semi-gantry crane is a good option when you want an overhead lifting solution that only covers part of your premises. Whereas traditional overhead cranes tend to span the entire width of a warehouse, our expert team can produce semi-gantry that only extend over a particular piece of machinery or a specific workstation. Not only does this let you better achieve your goals, it also keeps costs down.
Another price-reducing factor is that semi-gantry require fewer supporting columns to be erected compared to fully overhead cranes, as the rail of one side of the crane is floor mounted. However, you do need to ensure you have the space available for this floor mounted rail to be installed and this area needs to be kept clear while the crane is in use to ensure safe working practices. Anti-clash sensors can be fitted to the floor mounted column to shut to limit the crane’s movement if it detects an obstacle.
UK leading semi-gantry crane services
Suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, semi-gantries are often the practical lifting solution for many applications.
We have a wealth of experience in supplying bespoke semi-cranes in a range of different industries and sectors. We can customise each crane with a range of hoisting and powering options and also offer various extras, including access ladders, walkways and floodlights.
Not only do we load test, deliver and install all of our semi-gantries, our service and support department can ensure the ongoing performance of your new lifting system with maintenance contracts, repairs and spare parts.
Fixed Gantry Cranes
Unlike their portable counterparts, our fixed gantry cranes are bolted to your workplace floor for increased stability and lifting heavier loads.
E&C Crane Engineering are a leading UK manufacturer of fixed cranes. Whatever your requirements, and regardless of what you need to lift, we can help you find a fixed gantry that optimises operations within your workspace.
Bespoke fixed gantry crane design
Our fixed gantries can support various capacities and use a knockdown construction design for easy erection and dismantling. They form a compact package for carriage or storage when not assembled and ready for use.
Fixed cranes come in one of a number of styles. They can either use an A-frame crane design similar to that of our portable options, or they can be attached to goal post supports (much like a monorail crane). Fixed cranes are often viewed as light duty lifting systems, however they can support as much as 10 tonne safe working loads if required.
Fixed cranes are static kind of A-frame gantry. Portable versions are also available click through to our mobile gantry and portable crane pages to learn more.
